Do I have the right idea?

Question

The numerator of a certain fraction is four times the denominator. If 12 is added to both the numerator and denominator, the resulting fraction is equivalent to 2. What was the original fraction? 

 

Would the first equation be 4(d) then 12N+12D=2?

Madison, 4d is not an equation, nor a fraction. 

 

How does adding 12 turn into 12D or 12N?

 

A fraction equal to 2 is something like 8/4 or 1000/500.

 

Now, you could set it up like...

 

n = 4d

(n + 12)/(d + 12) = 2

 

Substituting 4d for n...

 

(4d + 12)/(d + 12) = 2

2(d + 12) = 4d + 12

2d + 24 = 4d + 12

2d = 12

d = 6

 

n = 4(6) = 24

 

The original fraction is 24/6.
