First find out how much paint it takes to paint one doghouse.
3/4 ÷ 2 = 3/4 * 1/2 = 3/8 gallons of paint for one doghouse.
Now divide the total paint by 3/8
5 1/2 ÷ 3/8 = 11/2 * 8/3 = 88/6 = 14 4/6 = 14 2/3. Therefore he has enough paint to paint 14 doghouses.
To find the leftover paint. Multiply 14 by the amount of paint it takes to paint one.
14 * 3/8 = 42/8 = 5 2/8 = 5 1/4. It takes, 5 1/4 gallons of paint to paint 14 doghouses.
The amount leftover is found by subtracting 5 1/2 - 5 1/4 = 11/2 - 21/4 = 22/4 - 21/4 = 1/4. There will be 1/4 gallon left over.
