If say the ticket to a Bon Jovi concert cost $9 for adults and $6.50 for students. And there is a total of 950 people paid $7675 to attend. How many student concert goers attended?

Let x = the number of adult attendees

 

y = the number of students who attended

 

x + y = 950  (the total number of concert-goers)

 

9x + 6.50y = 7675  (the total amount paid by all attendees)

 

Solve the first equation for y

 

y = 950 - x

 

Now, plug this into the second equation

 

9x + 6.50(950 - x) = 7675

 

9x + 6175 - 6.50x = 7675

 

2.5x + 6175 = 7675

 

2.5x = 1500

 

x = 600 = the number of adults who attended

 

y = 950 - x = 950 - 600 = 350= the number of students who attended
