Jayden walked a total of 12x+5r-8 miles on Monday and Tuesday. If he walked 7x-10r miles on Monday, how many miles did he walk on Tuesday?

Jahden walked (12x + 5r - 8) - (7x -10r) = 5x + 15r - 8 miles on Tuesday.

Monday and Tuesday distance =  12x + 5r - 8

 

Monday distance =  7x - 10r

 

So Tuesday distance is simply the combined Monday and Tuesday distance, minus the Monday distance:

 

     Tuesday distance =  12x + 5r - 8  -  (7x - 10r)

                               =   12x + 5r - 8 - 7x + 10r

                                =  5x + 15r - 8

 

Check:  (5x + 15r - 8) + (7x - 10r)  = 12x + 5r - 8  (checks out)
