I would solve for one of the variables in one equation and then plug that value into the second equation . . .
-6x - 8y = -4 solve for x
-6x = 8y - 4 divide both sides by -6
x = -8/6y + 4/6 reduce fractions as possible
x = -4/3 y + 2/3
x + y = 1
-4/3 y + 2/3 +y = 1 combine y terms
-1/3 y +2/3 = 1 collect number values
-1/3y = 1/3 multiple both sides by -3
y = -1
substitute y = -1 into the equation to find x
x+ y = 1
x + -1 = 1
x = 2
