Billy is putting a pool in his backyard. The length of the space for the pool is 28 feet wide. He wants his pool to be 22 1/2 feet long and centered in this space. How wide can he make the pool deck that goes around the pool?

28 - 22 1/2 = 27 2/2 - 22 1/2 = 5 1/2

 

The 5 1/2 ft has to be divided in half because you have half on either end.

 

5 1/2 x 1/2 = 11/2 × 1/2 = 11/4 = 2 3/4 ft
