Writing about either literature or civilization will require you to explore the human condition, albeit from different disciplinary perspectives. The human condition, however, is an immense subject. Research works best when the focus is narrowed.
I recommend writing about literature so that you can narrow the focus of your research to a specific author, or even a specific book, poem, or play.
While civilization can also be narrowed to region, time period, etc., conducting research about even that narrow a focus could be challenging to manage.
I encourage students to narrow their topic as much as they can before they begin their research. It is easier to craft search terms and choose subject-specific databases with a narrow scope.
