Suppose a certain religious university has a ratio of approximately 100 males to 125 females enrolled as students. If the current enrollment at the university is 20,000 and every male on campus asks a female student to a dance, how many women will be without dates to the dance?

No. of total students = 20000

 

ratio of male : women = 100: 125

 

So total no. of male=100x

 

no. of women =125 x

 

100x + 125x = 20000

 

225 x = 20000

 

x = 88.89 =88

 

there is not rounding off  as no. student cannot be in decimal so we consider it as 88

 

so number of male=100x=100(88)=8800

number of female = 150x =150(88)=13200

 number of women will be without dance = 13200-8800 = 4400
