Jerry, if the sum of two numbers is ten and the smaller is x, then the larger is 10 - x.
2(10 - x) - (-20)
We use the distributive property and remember that subtracting a negative number is like adding.
20 - 2x + 20
Now, we combine like terms.
-2x + 40
If negative numbers confuse you, look at a bank statement. Let's say the bank charges you a $20 fee. It shows up as -$20. We can either subtract $20 from our balance or add the negative 20 and get the same result.
