This is a multi-step question so we must first create an equation using x as the unknown. In this case, a number is the unknown. So if 7 times the sum of x and 1 is 35, the equation would look like this:
7 (x+1)=35
(x+1) must be in parentheses because the problem says 7 times the sum of x and 1. The 7 needs to be distributed to both the x and 1 (the sum of those two numbers) which only happens if the (x+1) is within the parentheses.
Once we have the equation, we simply need to solve for x.
7(x+1)=35
Distribute the 7 to everything within the parenthes: 7x+7=35
Subtract 7 from both sides: 7x=28
Divide both sides by 7: x=4
We can check our work by replacing x in the equation with our answer: 4
So 7(x+1)=35 becomes 7 (4+1)=35 7(5)=35
So after checking our work, we find that x=4
Hope this helps!
