An elementary school buys tickets for a field trip to the zoo.  The number of children going on the field trip is 12 times the number of adults.  Tickets for children cost $8 each and tickets for adults cost $10 each.  The total cost of all of the tickets is $2650, how many tickets of each type did the school purchase?

1-Let x = number of adult tickets

       12x = number of child tickets

2-Since the sale of BOTH child and adult tickets = $2650,

set up the equation as 8(12x) + 10x = 2650

3-To solve:

    8(12x) + 10x = 2650

    (solve () )

    96x + 10x = 2650

     (combine "x" terms)

     106x = 2650

     (divide by 106 to isolate "x",

      and do this on both sides)

     106x  = 2650

      x = 25

4- Use this to return to complete the number

of each ticket type:

x = number of adult tickets

25 = number of adult tickets
12x = number of child tickets

12(25) = 300 = number of child tickets
