Allen buys 16 yards of nylon carpet and 20 yards of wool carpet for $1840. A second purchase, at the same prices, includes 18 yards of nylon carpet and 25 yards of wool carpet for $2200. Find the cost per yard of the wool carpet.

Hey Donald -- we can "rescale" the 1st buy up by 25% ... 20N + 25W is $2300 ...

 

2 extra N's cost 100 ... N= 50, 25W is 1300 ... 100W = 5200 ==> W= $52 ... Regards :)

First purchase

16x + 20 y = 1840

 

Second purchase

18x + 25y = 2200
