Suppose the leftmost digits of two numbers are 8 and 3. Can you tell which number is greater? Explain.

In both examples, the leftmost digits are 8 and 3. In the first example, the number with 8 as its leftmost digit is larger. But, in the second example, the opposite is true (the number with 3 as its leftmost digit is larger). So, just by looking at the leftmost digit, we can't tell which number is larger.
