In addition to primogeniture (rule by right) some monarch claimed "divine right," god gave them the power and right to rule. The House of Windsor - actually the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha - has as the motto on the royal crest: Dieu et Mon Droit - God and my Right.

Kings (or QUEENS) generally inherited their position due to primogeniture, i.e. being first born of a monarch. 

 

In cases where that could not pertain, other royalty would be brought in, e.g. Sweden brought in one of Napoleon's generals (Bernadotte, I believe)--chosen by consensus of the Swedish aristocracy.
