Andrea and Briana own a company, whose profit was $18000 in the month of May. Because Andrea took some time off in May, she agreed to receive $4500 less than the amount of that Briana receives. How much money do each of them receive?

Let's let

A = amount that Andrea receives

B = amount that Briana receives

 

The first sentence tells us

A + B = 18000

 

The second sentence says 

A = B - 4500

 

We can substitute the 2nd equation into the first equation.

 

B - 4500 + B = 18000

 

Cleaning this up we have

2B - 4500 = 18000

2B = 22500

B = 11250

 

Then A = 6750

 

Check this:

6750 + 11250 = 18000
