I am a number with 8 tens. The digit in my ones place is 4 more than the digit in my hundreds place. The sum of my digits is 16. What number am I?

Any number can be written as 

 

(hundreds digit)*100 + (tens digit)*10 + (Ones digit)*1.

 

So if your number has 8 tens, then there is an 8 for the 10's digit.

The sum is 16, so let the hundreds digit be A and the ones digit be B, so now the number looks like A 8 B.

 

The digits add up to 16, so A+8+B=16, or A+B=8

 

The ones place (B) is four more than the digit in hundred's place (A)

 

Can write this as B=4+A

 

Now we know that A+B=8 and B=4+A, can substitute second equation into first.

 

A + (4+A)=8

 

4 + 2A = 8

 

2A=4

 

A=2, therefore B=6.
