Let A represent the number of hours Annie travelled and let B represent the number of hours Brian travelled.
Annie travelled 5 times the sum of the number of hours Brian travelled and 2.
So A = 5(B+2)
A = 5B + 10
Together, Annie and Brian travelled 20 hours. So A+B=20.
5B+10+B=20
6B+10=20
6B=10
B=10/6=5/3= one and two-thirds hours or 1 hour 40 minutes.
A=5B+10
A=5(5/3)+10
A=25/3+30/3
A=55/3= eighteen and one third hours or 18 hours 20 minutes.
Checking our answer, 1 hour 40 minutes + 18 hours 20 minutes = 20 hours so we know our answer is correct.
