I need help with a word problem involving algebra

Question

A box had twice as many grapes as a basket. Once two kilograms of grapes were added to the basket, it contained 0.5 kg more than the box. How many kilograms of grapes are in the basket now?

Answer 1

b represents the number of grapes in the basket

2b represents the number of grapes in the box

 

b + 2 = 2b + 0.5

2 = b +0.5            subtract b from both sides

1.5 = b                 subtract 0.5 from both sides
