Putting dimes 'end-to-end' means putting them side by side so that diameters through each dime form a straight line.
Each diameter is said to be ½ inch, so the length of the string of dimes it 5 times one half, or 2.5 inches.
When you read a word problem, try to 'act it out' If you don't have 5 dimes, try 5 pennies, just to visualize the situation.
Read first, think second, and if necessary repeat these two steps. Visualizing, or making a drawing, is usually helpful.
