Since the total sample of the study was 279 + 264 = 543, then P(girl) = 279/543 = .51 or 51%.

 

While the answer to the second part might appear to be "yes", given the information in the study, I wouldn't be able to answer the second question without knowing how the results of this technique compared with the general population or to another sample that didn't use this technique.
