Good job, Alan (albeit you misspelled feel).  It makes me wonder what kind of material the students are learning from in schools, nowadays. It does not appear that the general scheme(s) are being taught properly, by either teachers or their Common Core handouts.

The now retired good math books explained these things rather well, with plenty of examples/illustrations. But apparently not many are reading those good books. Instead, they work in unsupervised groups from recently xeroxed for-profit materials, too often... Welcome to the worksheet-by-committee world of today.

Kenneth,

Thanks for the compliment and the spelling correction. (I tend to type fast and inaccurately.) I suggest respectfully that you avoid criticizing Common Core textbooks in this format. It is a good topic for discussion in one of the discussion boards designed for tutors and teachers, but when a student reads comments like this, it can send them a bad signal that their teacher is not being helped. I may agree with you, but the students who ask questions like this do not need to hear our political views on current math instruction methods.

I send this not to criticize, but to make you a little more sensitive to the students who use WyzAnt to try to understand their homework. Please do not take it personally. We are here to help them whatever they ask us.
