A population has a standard deviation of 38. Calculate the standard error for a sample of size 120 taken from this population.

Jason L.

Standard error = sample SD / sqrt(n)

SE = 38/sqrt(120) = 3.47

This means the sample falls 3.47 SDs away from the population mean.  If you were running a hypothesis test, then you would reject the null hypothesis since the sample falls more than 1.96 SDs away from the population mean.
