two cars P and Q start at same time from A and B which are 120 km apart if two cars travel in opposite direction they meet after one hour and if they travel in same direction(from A toward B) then P meets Q after 6 hours what is speed of car P

 

 

please understand my problem

i understand problem but dont get logic how to form equation please explain me concept of this problem

The answer Mark provided assumes that car Q doesn't move from Q in 6 hours (at least that's what I think he said ;-)

 

If we assume that car Q starts moving from point Q at the same time car P starts from P, then the problem becomes a bit trickier.

 

(1) in the case where the two cars are moving toward each other, the distance traveled by car P is d and the distance car Q travels is 120 - d as Mark states.

 

Now, distance in terms of speed is given for each car as:

 

P: d = s₁ * 1hr => d = s₁

Q: 120 - d = s₂ * 1hr => d = -s₂ + 120

 

So, s₁ = -s₂ + 120

 

Now, unfortunately, we have 2 variables (s₁, s₂) and only 1 equation.  If this is all we had, we'd be out of luck.  

 

However, we have case 2 to help us.

 

(2) if the cars are moving in the same direction, then the distance car P travels in 6 hours is d + 120:

 

P: d + 120 = s₁ * 6hr => d = 6s₁ - 120

 

The distance car Q travels is d:

 

Q: d = s₂ * 6hr => d = 6s₂

 

So,

 

6s₁ - 120 = 6s₂ => s₁ - 20 = s₂ (dividing all terms by 6)

 

We now have two equations for our two variables (s₁, s₂):

 

s₁ = -s₂ + 120 

 

s₁ - 20 = s₂

 

If we substitute the value of s₁ in the first equation for s₁ in the second, then:

 

-s₂ + 120 - 20 = s₂

 

100 = 2s₂

 

50km/h = s₂ (the speed of car Q)

 

To find s₁, substitute 50 for s₁ in s₁ - 20 = s₂:

 

s₁ - 20 = 50 => s₁ = 70km/hr (speed of car P)

 

 

Answer 3

The second clause states that P reaches Q (120 km away) in 6 hours. P is traveling 20 kph.

For the two cars traveling towards each other:

P: 120 - d = 20(1)

Q: d = r(1)

Substituting r for d

120 - r = 20

- r = - 100

r = 100

 

Q is traveling at 100 kph.
