The length of each side of a square is 3 in. more than the length of each side of a smaller square. The sum of the areas of the squares is 369369 in squared .in2. Find the lengths of the sides of the two squares.

x represents the side of the smaller square

x + 3 represents the side of the larger square

 

x² + (x + 3)² = 369369

x² + x² + 6x + 9 = 369369

2x² + 6x + 9 = 369369

2x² + 6x - 369360 = 0

x² + 3x - 18460 = 0

 

Using the Quadratic Formula the roots are two unequal irrational numbers.
