The fairest way to do this is to begin by filling the tank. This cost is not relevant. It is just a starting point. Upon completion of the trip fill the tank again. Total all costs for gas that occurred during the trip not including the cost of the initial fill-up. Divide this amount by 5 to calculate each person's share. The owner of the car began with a full tank and also has a full tank at the end. In this case I would estimate that each person would contribute $15 (the cost of filling the tank should be $75 if it costs $50 to fill it 2/3 of the way. The initial cost of $60 should be paid by the owner of the car. He started with a full tank; he now has a full tank.
just my 2 cents (pun intended)
