if a = 4+2√3 find √a - 1/√a. Edited by me to make it more understandable. Note: we want to find the difference between √a and its reciprocal (because the a-1 is NOT parenthesized).
√a - 1/√a = (a - 1)/√a
= [4+2√3 - 1]/√(4+2√3)
=[3+2√3]/√(4+2√3) and I prefer to leave the answer in this form rather than doing a messy rationalizing of denominator.
