A cell phone company charges a monthly fee of $10 for the first 1000 text messages, after that they charge $.10 for each additional message.  If Tom's bill was $38.50 for May, how many text messages did he send?

First take the $10 from the total.

 

$38.50 - $10.00 = $28.50

 

Tom spent $28.50 extra for texts over 1000.

 

Divide $28.50 by $0.10 to find the number of texts.

 

$28.50/$0.10 = 285

 

Add 285 to 1000.

 

285 + 1000 = 1285.

 

Tom sent 1285 texts. 

 

285 would be the answer if the question asked how many texts were sent over the 1000.
