In 2003, the population of Zimbabwe was about 12.6 million people, which is 1 million more than 4 times the population in 1950. Write and solve an equation to find the approximate population p of Zimbabwe in 1950.

So, Brian, if we let x = the population in 1950, then...

 

12,600,000 = 4x + 1,000,000

11,600,000 = 4x

x = 2,900,000
