Properties of Exponents

Question

The following question is from my study guide for math. I'm stuck on this one question: A radio signa travels at 3.00 • 10^8 meters per second. How many seconds will it take for a radio signal to travel from a satellite to the surface of Earth if the satellite is orbiting at a height of 3.54 • 10^7 meters? 

 

Can somebody please walk me through the steps to solving this, so I can better understand how to for similar questions? :-)

Let T = time, in seconds

 

Rate * Time = Distance

 

The distance is from earth to the satellite.

 

(3 • 10⁸) • T = 3.54 • 10⁷

 

T = (3.54 • 10⁷)/(3 • 10⁸ )

 

T = (3.54/3)•(10⁷/10⁸⁾

 

T = 1.18 • 10^-1  seconds
