The slope-intercept form of the equation of a line is: y=mx+b
where m=slope and the point (0,b) is the y-intercept.
Other words for slope are grade, gradient, incline, rise, pitch, slant.
Slope is often called "rise over run" because it measures the increase in y-values divided by the increase in x-values. Thus, a positive slope indicates a line getting bigger y-values as it gets bigger x-values (upward slope) and a negative slope indicates a line getting smaller y-values as it gets bigger x-values (downward slope).
The line y=5x-1 has m=slope=gradient=5,
so for each increase of 1 for x, y increases 5.
