Elise and Robin are in the same class and have to read the same book. Which is 400 pages long. Elise reads faster than Robin, namely 1 page per minute. She finishes the book 2 hours earlier than Robin. How fast does Robin read?

It seems that Elise reads at 1 page per minute, or 60 pages per hour. So it takes her 400 pages ÷ (pages/hour) = 20/3 = E hours to read the whole book.

 

Elise: 400 pages = (rate)(E+2)  ⇐ this is her rate (pages/hour) multiplied by her time, 2 hours more than Elise's above time, E.

Therefore Elise's rate is 400 ÷(20/3 + 2)  = 46.154 pages per hour

So Elise's reading rate is 46.154/60  = 0.77 pages per minute.
