The perimeter of a rectangular floor is 180 feet. Find the dimensions of the floor if the length is five times the width

Perimeter 180 feet
 
Let w be the width, so length is 5w.
 
so,
 
2w + 2(5w) = 180 
 
2w + 10w = 180
 
12w = 180
 
w = 15, so length is 75

width...x
Perimeter=2(length + width)
180=2(5x+x)
180=2(6x)
180=12x
Let's divide both sides by 12...
180/12=(12x)/12
15=x
width...15 feet
length...5(15)=75 feet
 
Let's check our work...
180=2(75+15)
180=2(90)
180=180

Hey Kevin -- cutting the perimeter in half means one L and one W is 90ft ...
 
since the ratio is 5:1, W is 1/6 of 90ft or 15ft ... 75L, 15W does it ... Regards :)
DEFINITION:    2*W + 2*L = PERIMETER OF A RECTANGLE,  W= WIDTH, L= LENGTH
 
GIVEN:  L= 5*W
 
2*W + 2*(5*W) = 180
 
2*W + 10*W = 180
 
12 * W = 180
 
W= 180 / 12
 
W=  15
 
 
L=5*W
 
L = 5*15
 
L = 75
******************
 
CHECK:  2*W + 2*L = 180  
 
2*15 + 2*75 = ?
 
30 + 150 = 180   OK!
