I believe the problem is asking for the total amount of cable needed, in feet.
8 pieces @ length of 23.5 feet = 188
7 pieces @ length of 18.5 feet = 129.5
12 pieces @ length of 24.5 feet = 294
25 pieces @ length of 19.6 feet = 487.5
The sum of these values gives us the total amount of cable, in feet
188 + 120.5 + 294 + 487.5 = 1099 feet
