A company is planning on producing rubber slippers. Turns out that the fixed monthly cost to run things is $20,000 and it will cost $2 to make each pair of slippers. How many slippers must be produced each month to have an average cost of $4.50?

20,000 = (avg selling price - cost) number of pairs of shoes

20,000 = (4.50 - 2.00)x

20,000 = 2.50x

   2.50     2.50        divide both sides by 2.50

 

8,000 = x

 

They need to sell 8,000 pairs of shoes to break even at an average cost of 4.50 per pair.
