This is a word problem so you need to use variables to represent unknowns.
x = # of car owners
y = # of truck owners
Since you know 20 people were asked....
x + y = 20
Then you know that there are 6 more car owners than truck owners...
x = y + 6
Use substitution for x....
(y + 6) + y = 20
Solve for y, which gives 7. So there are 7 truck owners. Subtract this from 20, and you find that there are 13 car owners.
