3x - 4 = 4x - 8

-3x        -3x        subtract 3x from both sides to move the 3x and 4x to the same side

     -4  =  x - 8

     +8        +8     add 8 to both sides to get the -4 and -8 to the same side

      4  =  x

 

check it:

3(4) - 4 = 4(4) - 8

 12  - 4 =  16  - 8

      8    =     8
