Then, the next consecutive odd integer must be (x+2).

 

Translate:

"sum of two consecutive odd integers is 116"   means

             x   +   (x+2)                       = 116

 

The math:

  x + (x+2) = 116

  2x + 2 = 116         [collect terms]

  2x = 114         [subtract 2 from both sides]

   x = 57           [divide both sides by 2]

 

So,

the first odd integer is 57

and the second odd integer is (x+2).  That is, 59.

I am attempting a sort of logic in this case. I do not know if there is a specific formula to apply.

 

If we divide the number in two we have 58

 

116/2= 58

 

Being odds numbers and consecutives, the only option I can see is to add 1 to one of them and subctract 1 to the other.

 

From this operation we obtain 59 from 58+1, and 57 from 58-1
