How to divide sand dollars?

Question

Two guys were about to eat a meal of coconuts. One had brought 2 coconuts and the other had brought 3. As they were about to begin a mermaid arrived they invited her to join. When they finished eating, the  mermaid tossed five sand dollars down on the beach and asked them to divide them fairly according to what each had contributed. How should the two guys divide the sand dollars?

Each person (is a mermaid a person?) got 5/3 of a coconut.

The one who had 2 gave up 1/3 of a coconut (2 - 5/3)

The one who had 3 gave up 4/3 of a coconut (3 - 5/3) 

 

One dollar to the first, four dollars to the second.
