Simplifying Functions

If f(x)= 4x—3 , simplify : f(1+h)—f(1)/h 

 

 

The last part when you simplife I don't know if I leave at 3+4h/h or if it's 7 ?

Here is how you would read this:  f(x) when x=1+h   minus    f(x) when x=1.  The difference is then divided by h.  Therefore you have.

 

 

  (4(1 + h) - 3) - (4(1) - 3)

  4 + 4h - 3 - 1

______________ =

        h

 

 

4h

___   =    4

 h

 

 

Answer is 4.
