The length of a rectangle is five centimeters more than its width, w. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 26 centimeters what is the area of the rectangle, in centimeters?

Alright, Anna, if the width is w, then the length is w + 5, right?

 

How do we find perimeter? 2w + 2l, but l is w + 5!

 

2w + 2(w + 5) = 26

2w + 2w + 10 = 26

4w = 16

w = 4

 

The length is w + 5 = 4 + 5 = 9

 

Area = l x w = 4 x 9 = 36 cm²
