Is this a counterexample to the converse or to the contrapositive?

Question

Let p be "Cody wins his tennis match" and q be "Cody will go to the state tournament."

Suppose Cody goes to the state tournament but he does not win his tennis match.

Answer 1

p →  q          statement

q → p           converse

 

If Cody goes to state, he has won his match.

 

Statement is a counter to the converse.

Yes, it is a logic problem.  P is the hypothesis and Q is the conclusion.  They are neither connected by AND nor by OR.

 

In order to be a counterexample, the hypothesis P must be accepted, but the conclusion should be different from Q. 

 

If we take the case of the contrapositive:

 

If Cody does not go to state tournament, then Cody does not (did not) win his tennis match.  But the counterexample would be negating the hypothesis here, so it cannot be a counterexample to the contrapositive.

 

As Mark stated, it is the counterexample to the converse since the hypothesis to the converse is that Cody goes to the state tournament, and the counterexample agrees with this.

this is really a logic problem. 

it can only be the contrapositive if the first statement is a conditional( if..else). 

I see that you have seperatley P , Q. and the second statement is not P , Q. 

To me the lack of logical and, logical or, in this problem makes it ambiguous
