Do polynomial long division:
                   5x2 + 10x + 17
x - 2 ) 5x3 + 0x2    - 3x  + 1
          5x3 - 10x2
                  10x2   - 3x
                  10x2 - 20x
                            17x  + 1
                            17x - 34
                                     35
 
 
Therefore, we get
 
(5x3 - 3x + 1) / (x - 2) = 5x2 + 10x + 17 + 35/(x-2)

The direction was to "simplify." In Algebra that direction means to rewrite with a few symbols as possible. It is not the same as the direction "divide."
The quotient/remainder presented has more symbols that the original. It is less "simple."
