A chocolate chip cookie recipe asks for two and three quarters times as much flour as chocolate chips. If three and two thirds cups of flour is used, what quantity of chocolate chips would then be needed, according to the recipe?

in this problem, the unknown amount is that of the chocolate chips, so let's call that x.

x = chocolate chips

 

we know two things about the flour, the amount and its relation to the amount of chips

flour = 3 2/3 cups

flour = 2 3/4 times the amount of chocolate chips, or 2 3/4 x

 

now we can set up the equation and solve for x, which is the amount of chocolate chips:

2 3/4 x = 3 2/3

 

11/4 x = 11/3

 

divide both sides by 11/4 to isolate the variable

x = 11/3 ÷ 11/4

x = 11/3 * 4/11

x = 4/3 or 1 1/3 cups
