Andy’s house is on a large lot

Andy’s house is on a large lot. He bought 100 yards of chain-link fence on sale. He wants to use all of the material to fence in an area in his backyard. He can only make the fenced area 60 feet wide and he wants it to be as long as possible. What is the longest length possible for the sides?

We are talking perimeter in this word problem.  Perimeter = 2(L + W).

 

And then we have to convert yards to feet.

 

1 yard = 3 Feet

 

So 100 yards = 300 feet

 

Substitute 300 feet for the perimeter and 60 for the Width

 

300 = 2(L + 60)  Now that we have the equation, solve for L

 

300/2 = 2(L + 60)/2

 

150 = L + 60

 

150 - 60 = L +60 - 60

 

L = 90 feet or 30 yards
