 im confused on whether water is covalent , metal or ionic bond . my teacher tells me one thing then my other teacher tells me another.

EN value of > .5 for the O-H bond makes the bonds polar

 

The molecule is polar due to the polar bonds and the lone pairs on the central atom (oxygen)

Water is Covalent. The main reason for it is because H₂O is a nonmetal compound. Further on, the electronegativity of Oxygen is great enough to hold onto its electrons and have no pull from the less electronegativte hydrogen atom(Oxygen has a greater electron affinity).
