Hi Courtney.
We have 2 amounts invested. Let's call them X and Y
X = amount invested at 11%
Y = amount invested at 8%
The total of the two investments is 9500
X + Y = 9500 <-----equation 1
The total yield (i.e. the total interest earned) was $937.
We can write this algebraically as
.11X + .08Y = 937 <-----equation 2
We need to find X and Y
From equation 1
X+Y=9500
and
X = 9500-Y
We can substitute 9500-Y for X in equation 2
.11(9500-Y) + .08Y = 937
distributing the .11
1045 - .11Y + .08Y = 937
1045 - .03Y = 937
Subtract 1045 from both sides
-.03Y = -108
Divide by -.03
Y = 3600
And since X = 9500-Y
X = 9500-3600
X = 5900
So $5,900 is invested at 11% and $3,600 is invested at 8%.
