This gives us the equation w + w/2 = 474, since together they sold a total of 474.

 

Solving we get:  w + w/2 = 474

                   2w/2 + w/2 = 474   (common denominator)

                             3w/2 = 474

                         2(3w/2) = 2*474 (multiply both sides by 2 to cancel the denominator)

                                3w = 948     (divide both sides by 3 to get w)

                                  w = 316

 If Wade sold 316 magazines, then Amy sold 316/2, or 158.

 

To check, 316 + 158 = 474.
