Billy went shopping at a local clothing store and bought 6 shirts and 5 pairs of pants for $179. Sam went to the same store and bought 3 shirts and 8 pairs of pants for 218.75. How much does a shirt cost at the store ?

6s + 5p = 179           Let's solve for p (the price of pants)

        5p = 179 - 6s

          p = 35.8 - 1.2s

 

Now let's plug our value for p into the second equation, and solve for s (the price of a shirt)

 

                 3s + 8p = 218.75

3s + 8(35.8 - 1.2s) = 218.75

   3s + 286.4 - 9.6s = 218.75

          -6.6s +286.4 = 218.75

                      -6.6s = -67.65

                            s = 10.25
