Maggie has a job working in a office for $10 an hour and another job driving a tractor for $12 an hour. One week she works in a office twice as long as she drives the tractor. Her total income for that week is $416. How many hours did she spend at each job?

First statement - Her total pay is:

10a + 12b = 416

Second statement - hours worked:

a = 2b

 

Substitute 2b for a in the first equation:

10(2b) + 12b = 416

20b + 12b = 416

32b = 416

b = 13 hours driving the tractor

 

a = 2b

a = 2(13)

a = 26 hours working in the office.

 

Check:

10a + 12b = 416

10(26) + 12(13) = 416

260 + 156 = 416

416=416
