The high school basketball team played 19 games. They won five more games than they lost. How many games did they win?

Answer 1

if x is # of games lost

and y is # of games won

 

x + 5 = y & x + y = 19

 

solve a system of 2 equations, substituting the first equation into the second

 

x + x + 5 = 19

solve for x

2x = 14

  x = 7

 

then solve for y using either equation

7 + y = 19

      y = 12

 

they won 12 games
